More Chicken Pickin'
I was dying to do more research so I ran out to Trader Joe's in Los Gatos and picked up a bag of their brand frozen, boneless, skinless, "iced glazed, minimally processed" chicken thigh meat. "No preservatives, no MSG, no hormones."
BTW, everyone says that they don't use hormones, because it's against federal regulations to use hormones in poultry.
There's no mention of antibiotics one way or the other. And they don't say from where they get their chicken either. The web site pretends to be helpful, it does say that their "products rock," but there is no information about their food source. And speaking of chicken, I have a bone to pick with Trader Joe's in another post, about their source of fish.
Oh joy, the serving size is one thigh or 73 g. Let's see, 1 oz = 28 g, so that's 2.61 oz. That ought to make the calories and cholesterol look better!
Calories 110
Cholesterol 45mg 15%
Sodium 55mg 2%
For a 4 oz serving that comes to:
Calories 168
Cholesterol 69mg 23%
Sodium 84mg 3%
This is actually closer to the Raley's product than the standardized data. I think that my next assignment is to check on the government's actual published numbers. They are accessible via an on-line database tool.
When did food get so complicated and why is our food chain kept secret from us?
